Border control

Yes, I am finally getting stuck into the border! Nursing a very sore mouth from a trip to the dentist yesterday so crocheting today is a nice distraction :-)

Colour

Meanwhile, as I have been crocheting those 180 blocks together (I think it has taken longer to darn the ends, 'block' them and then crochet them together than actually making the blocks - then there is still the border!) I have been deciding on my next crochet blanket project....which brought me to this site - Design Seeds.

If you are on Pinterest you probably would've already seen some of these wonderful colour palettes pop up now and again.

There are hundreds of photos like these to browse through sorted into categories like 'The Sea', 'Creatures' etc, and I love the colour inspiration they give.

Lesson in working with Yarn - Number 1....

....always buy enough for your project before you start!!! I have learnt the hard way this past week....

I have been working on this crochet Afghan flat out - determined to get it finished before I start anything new (sewing included). This is quite a departure from my usual 20 projects on the go and I have been feeling quite proud of myself!

And then, 10 squares short of the required 180 - I realised I was going to run out of wool. Initially I wasn't too worried (even though I bought it over a year ago) because the yarn I used was Spotlight's own Moda Vera range - in 100% wool and they always have it in stock even over the summer months.

So what greeted me in the yarn aisle at Spotlight - Moda Vera's 100% Wool, yes, but they have changed the entire range! Some of the colours are fairly similar to what I have but what's strange is that the texture is completely different. The new range is softer and feels less like 100% wool to me and the 'twist' is not as tight looking (for want of a better term!). Needless to say I was quite disappointed - but lesson learnt for sure. My calculations weren't that off because I had almost made it but next time I will be over estimating.

Next job after darning in the ends (I am over halfway now) will be to work out how to arrange the squares. Each of the 12 colour-ways were to be sewed together diagonally but I think I will end up having to do more of a random pattern which should look okay.

And then finally - the border - and on to another project :-)
